Myopia Management is Life Changing

Welcome to a place where your vision challenges meet compassionate care and innovative solutions for clearer, healthier eyesight.

What is Myopia?

Myopia, or “near-sightedness,” means you can see objects up close clearly, but distant objects look blurry.
In children, rapid growth also affects eye development. As the eye elongates and the cornea steepens, light focuses in front of the retina instead of directly on it, causing faraway objects to lose clarity. While glasses can correct focus, they cannot slow the progression of myopia or stop the eye from elongating.
Myopia has become increasingly common over the last two decades. Studies show that about 42% of Americans ages 12–54 are affected — nearly double compared to the previous generation. The good news is that today there are more effective myopia management options available than ever before.

Options for Myopia Management

At the Raleigh Contact Lens Institute, we provide advanced solutions to help slow the progression of myopia in children. The three most effective treatment options include:

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Orthokeratology (Ortho-k)

Ortho-K uses specially designed contact lenses worn overnight to gently reshape the cornea, providing clear daytime vision without glasses or contacts. This approach is often compared to “braces for the eyes” and is highly effective in managing childhood myopia progression.

An Introduction to Orthokeratology (Ortho-K)

Orthokeratology (Ortho-K) uses specially designed contact lenses that gently reshape the cornea overnight, allowing patients to enjoy clear vision throughout the day without glasses or daytime contacts. This non-surgical treatment is often compared to “braces for the eyes.”
The greatest advantage of Ortho-K lenses is their proven ability to slow the progression of childhood myopia. Beyond myopia management, children benefit from daytime freedom from glasses — making school, sports, and daily activities easier and more enjoyable. Studies also suggest that this freedom can boost confidence, academic performance, and even overall quality of life.

An Introduction to MiSight

MiSight 1 Day Contact Lenses by CooperVision are the first FDA-approved daily disposable lenses proven to slow the progression of childhood myopia (nearsightedness). Designed for children ages 8 to 12 at the start of treatment, MiSight lenses not only correct vision but also reduce the long-term risks of serious eye conditions like glaucoma, retinal detachment, and macular degeneration.
Myopia usually develops in school-aged children and often worsens until early adulthood. According to the American Optometric Association, nearly 34% of children between 12–17 years are myopic, with even higher prevalence among certain ethnic groups. By starting myopia management with MiSight lenses early, parents can help protect their child’s vision and overall eye health for the future.

An Introduction to Atropine

Atropine eye drops are a proven treatment to help slow the progression of myopia in children. Applied nightly, atropine does not correct vision directly but works to reduce eye elongation, which is the root cause of worsening nearsightedness.

Atropine can be prescribed as a stand-alone myopia management option or combined with other treatments like orthokeratology (ortho-k) or MiSight® contact lenses. It is also a great choice for children who may not yet be ready for contact lenses.

At the Raleigh Contact Lens Institute, we prescribe 0.05% low-dose atropine, the concentration supported by the latest research as the most effective and safest option for long-term myopia control.

Summary

Myopia management is a major focus area of our practice, and one of the main reasons the Raleigh Contact Lens Institute was established. Although a referral from another doctor is NOT necessary to become our patient, our office receives referrals from 100+ doctors in the surrounding area who trust us to care for their specialty lens and myopia management patients.

We receive these referrals because we have a deep expertise in the area of myopia management and use truly advanced medical instruments that are only found in a few doctor’s offices nationwide. A typical comprehensive exam at our office takes 1.5 hours, which leaves plenty of time for answering questions. This time is spent one-on-one with the doctor, which allows us to provide the most exceptional and compassionate care possible.

Our doctors are nationally recognized for their knowledge of the most up-to-date research and effective methods of myopia management, including ortho-k, MiSight, and atropine. Our doctors regularly present at both local and national meetings and conferences, where they share the latest research and fitting techniques with other doctors.
