Improving Vision Following a Corneal Transplant

Where Advanced Technology Meets Compassionate Care

While corneal transplants can save an individual’s vision in the case of a damaged, scarred, or excessively thin cornea, even a successful corneal transplant can have large impacts on vision quality. This is because it’s almost impossible to exactly match the curve of the new corneal tissue to the natural cornea.

Another element that adds complexity is the fact that it can take a couple of months to have stable vision after a corneal transplant because of the suturing and healing process that every transplanted cornea needs to go through.

Raleigh Contact Lens Institute has experience with optimizing vision after a corneal transplant, and has very specific technology which is intended to deliver high-performance vision after a corneal transplant. We receive many referrals of patients from other optometrists and ophthalmologists throughout North and South Carolina and are known in the region as a specialist for specialty lens fitting over corneal transplants.

Optimizing Vision After a Corneal Transplant

A corneal transplant is generally recommended in the following cases:

  • Vision problems caused by excessive thinning of the cornea, only after less invasive treatments have been proven ineffective
  • Scarred cornea caused by severe injuries or infections
  • Vision loss caused by cloudiness of the cornea from Fuchs Dystrophy, hydrops, and various forms of scarring
  • Poor vision despite specialty contact lens wear

With a corneal transplant, a patient will have a clear cornea to view through; however, corneal transplants will often have significant irregularity. This corneal irregularity results in blurred and/or distorted vision. Some eye doctors may recommend rigid gas permeable lenses (RGP’s), hybrid contact lenses, or scleral lenses for clear and comfortable vision.

Of all the options, scleral lenses are the most common treatment method at Raleigh Contact Lens Institute because they can be truly customized to each individual eye.  Up to 240,000 unique data points can be considered when designing a fully customized contact lens that vaults entirely over the cornea without adding any pressure to it, while allowing the cornea to remain hydrated for ultimate healing and comfort.

If you have questions about your eyes after a corneal transplant, we are available for a free phone consultation to discuss your specific situation and can be reached at (919) 850 5910 or hello@raleighcontactlens.com.
