Told Your Vision Cannot Improve?
You passed the eye chart — but your vision still doesn’t pass the reality test.
Have you been told your vision is “as good as it gets” — even if things still feel blurry, distorted, or uncomfortable? Many patients wearing glasses, gas-permeable lenses, or even scleral lenses continue to experience frustrating visual symptoms like halos, glare, starbursts, or ghosting, especially at night. Often, they’re told nothing more can be done.
While gas-permeable and scleral lenses do an excellent job of smoothing out irregularities on the front of the eye (which can reduce many Higher Order Aberrations or HOAs), they can’t always eliminate them entirely. Residual HOAs are still common, especially in patients with keratoconus, corneal scarring, corneal transplants, or other cases of corneal irregularity.
At the Raleigh Contact Lens Institute, we’re proud to be one of the few practices in the country offering truly customized solutions for these complex visual issues through the OVITZ xwave aberrometer, which helps us go one step further in restoring crisp, comfortable vision.

What Are Higher Order Aberrations?
If you’re already wearing specialty lenses—like scleral lenses or gas-permeable contacts—but still notice issues like glare, halos, starbursts, ghosting, or night vision problems, you may be dealing with something called Higher Order Aberrations (HOAs).
HOAs are tiny imperfections in the way light moves through your eye. These irregularities can be on the cornea, the lens inside your eye, or other internal structures. Even with a high-quality specialty lens in place, some of that distorted light may still reach your retina, causing vision that feels “off” — even if your prescription is technically correct.
Imagine shining a flashlight through a smooth glass versus a cut crystal. That’s the difference HOAs can make in how clearly you see.

Why Standard Tests Miss HOAs?
Most eye exams don’t evaluate for HOAs. Traditional tools like corneal topographers only look at the front surface of the eye — missing distortions deeper in the visual system. Even when HOAs are suspected, they often go unaddressed due to lack of technology.
Unlike other systems, the OVITZ xwave aberrometer scans the entire optical pathway of your eye — not just the front — capturing even the most subtle aberrations. This data is used to design OVITZ-Added Lenses, a revolutionary approach where custom optics are “added” into a stable scleral lens to neutralize your eye’s unique distortions.
Think of it like noise-canceling headphones for your vision — reducing the “visual static” you’ve been living with for years.
We often recommend this technology for patients with:
- Keratoconus
- Post-LASIK or RK vision issues
- Scarring or irregular corneas
- Persistent visual symptoms despite “normal” vision
- Frustration with ghosting, starbursts, or night glare
Even patients with healthy eyes can have enough HOA-related symptoms to benefit from this level of precision.
At the Raleigh Contact Lens Institute, we specialize in advanced vision correction — and we know firsthand how life-changing the right lenses can be.
For the right candidates, adding OVITZ technology to a well-fit scleral lens can drastically improve visual clarity, especially in cases where standard lenses fall short. These aren’t just better lenses — they’re the best vision science can offer.
Each scan from the OVITZ xwave aberrometer is individually reviewed by a trained engineer or doctor on the Ovitz team. This ensures that every design is uniquely tailored to cancel out your eye’s specific visual distortions — delivering the clearest, most precise vision possible.
