Custom Contact Lenses for Irregular Astigmatism: What You Need to Know

Irregular astigmatism occurs when the cornea’s curvature is uneven in multiple directions, making it difficult for glasses or standard soft contact lenses to correct vision. At the Charlotte Contact Lens Institute, we specialize in advanced custom contact lens designs — including scleral lenses, freeform scleral lenses, and EyePrintPRO — to deliver the best possible comfort, fit, and clarity for these complex cases.

Irregular astigmatism often results from:

  • Keratoconus or pellucid marginal degeneration
  • Post-surgical changes (LASIK, RK)
  • Corneal scarring or trauma
  • Post-corneal transplant complications

Unlike regular astigmatism, where the cornea has a symmetrical shape, irregular astigmatism involves unpredictable surface variations. This leads to visual problems such as distortion, ghosting, glare, and halos.

Custom contact lenses — especially scleral lenses and EyePrintPRO — are the most effective solution because they vault over the cornea, creating a smooth new optical surface that neutralizes distortions.

At our clinic, we take customization a step further with freeform scleral lenses, which allow us to fine-tune every millimeter of the lens fit for optimal vision and comfort.

We use the latest diagnostic imaging tools to ensure the highest level of customization:

  • Pentacam AXL Wave – full corneal tomography, elevation mapping, and higher-order aberration analysis
  • Scleral topography / profilometry – for precise mapping of scleral contours
  • Wavefront aberrometry – to detect subtle distortions beyond the reach of glasses or standard contacts

You may benefit from custom contact lenses if you have:

  • Keratoconus or pellucid marginal degeneration
  • Post-LASIK ectasia or post-RK distortions
  • Corneal transplant or corneal scarring
  • Irregular astigmatism from injury or disease

Severe dry eye or intolerance to traditional contact lenses

Can glasses fix irregular astigmatism?
Usually not. Glasses and standard soft lenses often fail to correct vision fully. Custom lenses provide far superior correction.
Yes. In fact, most patients find them more comfortable than traditional contact lenses.

With proper care, they typically last 2–3 years.
