Improving Vision and Comfort in Cases of SJS

- Where Advanced Technology Meets Compassionate Care

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is a rare but severe hypersensitivity reaction, usually triggered by medications or infections. It affects the skin and mucous membranes, often causing painful blistering, peeling, and in some cases, serious internal complications. Importantly, SJS can also impact ocular health, leading to vision problems that require specialized care.

At the Raleigh Contact Lens Institute, we combine advanced technology, extended exam times, and clinical expertise to manage eye complications associated with SJS. Our approach includes both dry eye treatments and specialty contact lenses to support healing and maximize comfort.

Using cutting-edge diagnostic technology that collects up to 240,000 unique data points, we design customized scleral contact lenses tailored to each patient’s needs. These lenses vault completely over the cornea without applying pressure, maintaining hydration and creating an environment that supports healing, comfort, and improved vision.

Optimizing Vision for Individuals with SJS

Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is most often triggered by certain medications, including antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and anticonvulsants. In some cases, viral or bacterial infections may also lead to SJS. Genetic predisposition can further increase the risk of developing this condition.
  • Skin Lesions – Painful red or purple rash, often resembling a burn.
  • Mucous Membrane Involvement – Lesions affecting the mouth, throat, genitals, and eyes.
  • Flu-like Symptoms – Fever, cough, and a general sense of malaise.
  • Ocular Symptoms – Redness, itching, burning sensation, and in severe cases, vision impairment.

Because of the complexity of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), treatment usually requires a multidisciplinary approach. Dermatologists, optometrists, ophthalmologists, and other specialists work together to manage different aspects of the condition. Standard care often involves discontinuing the triggering medication and providing supportive treatment.

Scleral lenses have become a highly effective option for managing ocular complications of SJS. They can be combined with advanced dry eye treatments for even greater results.

  • Enhanced Lubrication – Maintain a fluid reservoir to keep the eyes hydrated and reduce dryness.
  • Protection and Comfort – Provide a protective barrier for the cornea, minimizing abrasions and improving comfort.
  • Visual Improvement – Improve clarity when corneal irregularities affect vision.
  • Relief from Light Sensitivity – Help reduce photophobia, a common symptom in SJS patients.
