Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) is most often triggered by certain medications, including antibiotics, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), and anticonvulsants. In some cases, viral or bacterial infections may also lead to SJS. Genetic predisposition can further increase the risk of developing this condition.
  • Skin Lesions – Painful red or purple rash, often resembling a burn.
  • Mucous Membrane Involvement – Lesions affecting the mouth, throat, genitals, and eyes.
  • Flu-like Symptoms – Fever, cough, and a general sense of malaise.
  • Ocular Symptoms – Redness, itching, burning sensation, and in severe cases, vision impairment.

Because of the complexity of Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), treatment usually requires a multidisciplinary approach. Dermatologists, optometrists, ophthalmologists, and other specialists work together to manage different aspects of the condition. Standard care often involves discontinuing the triggering medication and providing supportive treatment.
